Want to sign your child up for a fun, healthy class? Take your family to a cool car show? How would you like to learn more about the games children play�€by joining in?
The West Virginia Motor Development Center in the West Virginia University School of Physical Education is now offering a variety of fall classes for children and parents, Choosy Celebrations and the first Healthy Kids Car Show Sunday, Sept. 23 at the Coliseum.
Registration is still being accepted for classes that begin the week of Sept. 10. Classes continue through Dec. 8. You can register on site at the class you select, or you can register in advance in room 241 Coliseum from 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Twenty-five classes are being offered; including three new courses, said Michelle Jeffrey, program coordinator at the Motor Development Center. The classes are open to all children in Morgantown and surrounding communities.
New classes
- MomsTime �€Includes children 9 months to 5 years old; 2-2:45 p.m., every Friday; E. Moore Hall gym. This class involves unstructured gym playtime for children to interact with others while gaining social skills. The 45 minute class allows moms and children to enjoy playing with other kids while increasing body movement and muscle coordination. Start children out young to begin a lifelong habit of healthy activity. This class offers a great way for moms to spend time with all the children at once while socializing with other parents in the class.
- MomsSplash �€Includes children 9 months to 5 years old; 1-1:45 p.m., every Friday, E. Moore Hall pool. This class involves aquatic playtime for children to interact with others while gaining aquatic and social skills. It is not a swim lesson class. The class is designed for the child and play partner to spend fun, quality time together while getting acquainted to the water. The play partner gets to socialize with other parents in the class.
- Women for Dance Dance Revolution (W4DDR) �€6-6:45 p.m., every Thursday, Room 132, Coliseum. This fun class is for women of all ages and abilities who would like to play DDR in a relaxed social atmosphere. The class is 45 minutes in length and will provide a basic introduction to DDR for those who are not familiar with it, while also providing game play for those already exercising with DDR . Other electronic games that promote physical activity will also be introduced. Join the class for an evening of DDR play guaranteed to offer you new information new exercise ideas and fun times.
Those interested in classes are encouraged to register as early as possible. Sign up for the activities is on a first-come, first-served basis.
These are wonderful classes for all children, and they do fill up quickly,Jeffrey said.Were ready to work with all children, including those with cerebral palsy or any child who might need extra help with body movement or muscle coordination.
The activities are designed and supervised by health and development professionals and conducted with the help of specialized students at WVU . The classes offer children from infants to pre-teens an opportunity to learn or hone skills, enjoy playing with others and begin a lifelong habit of healthy activity.
Class locations will be at the WVU Coliseum, room 132, with some activities in other areas of the Evansdale athletic complex, and at E. Moore Hall across from the Mountainlair on the Downtown Campus.
Other available classes include Infant Skills (3-6 months), Baby Skills (6 months to almost walking), Toddler Skills (almost walking through 2 years), Kinder Skills (3-5 years), Baby Splash (6 months to 2 years), Toddler Splash (2-3 years), Kinder Splash (3-5 years), Choosy Swim (4-6 and 7-11 years), Family Splash (6 months to 5 years), and Choosy Kids Club (5-11 years).

Car Show
In addition, the Healthy Kids Car Show will offer parents and children an opportunity to enjoy a fun day checking out cool, classy cars.
Registration will be from 9 a.m.-noon, Sunday, Sept. 23. Every car must be registered. Judging begins at 1 p.m. with an awards presentation at 4 p.m.
All categories of rides are welcome, including custom, antique, hot rods, imports, trucks, motorcycles, classics or thefixer-upper.
Dash plaques will be given to the first 50 entries, with five specialty awards and trophies awarded to the top 20 cars and trucks.
Other exciting activities and prizes include a fifty-fifty drawing, a giveaway raffle from Chick-fil-a and other participating restaurants. Other raffle items include a collectors item from Triple S. Harley Davidson, four sets of WVU season tickets and silent auction items. We will have free face painting for the kids, plus a concession area and bake sale.
Proceeds from the car show will benefit the Choosy Kids programs for children at WVU .
Choosy Celebration
For those who want to celebrate something special, schools, parents and groups can book a Choosy Celebration to celebrate birthdays, milestones, accomplishments, or life in general.
A Choosy Celebration includes Choosy, the Motor Development Centers colorful mascot for healthy life choices.
Groups of up to 25 children spend two hours in the gym or pool at E. Moore Hall and enjoy age-appropriate games, songs and activities. Invitations, play leaders, lifeguards, trained teachers, a group photo and party favors are included. Special attention is paid to the party child.
Gift certificates are available for classes or celebrations.
A gift certificate for these classes or for a celebration makes a wonderful, special gift from a parent, grandparent or any other family member to a child,Jeffrey said.The kids have a great time at the celebrations, and they book up fast.
