The Appalachian Prison Book Project (APBP), organized by faculty in the West Virginia University Department of English, will host an informational gathering from 5:30-7 p.m., Friday (Sept. 7), in Room 344, Stansbury Hall Library.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The APBP is composed of University students, professors and members of the Morgantown community. It is an official student organization of WVU focusing on the Appalachian region, principally West Virginia, but considers other requests.

In addition to our primary work of putting needed books in the hands of women and men in prison, the Appalachian Prison Book Project builds important connections, bringing together people involved in literacy efforts, prison reform, faith-based action and violence prevention, said professor Katy Ryan, the groups founder.

We also are in contact with family members of prisoners who are looking for a supportive community, she added. In hosting a gathering, were hoping to attract new members and ignite peoples enthusiasm for what were doing.

The APBP recently received a $7,540 grant to fund its efforts. Its library of 3,000 books is housed in the Garlow House, next door to the Morgantown Public Library.

The Department of English is in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at WVU .
