Daniel Della-Giustina, professor of safety management in the Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering, recently published the second edition of his textbookSafety and Environmental Management, making it the twelfth in his publication history.

The book emphasizes a complete safety management system design, said Della-Giustina, who teaches in the WVU College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. It shows industry professionals how to set up and maintain a company-wide safety plan that includes both safety and environmental concerns.

In the 310-page textbook, Della-Giustina addresses such advanced management concepts as participative management and quality circles, and he discusses how to incorporate them into all phases of the business.

The first edition was published in 1996 by Wiley. Several changes have been included in the new edition of the textbook; specifically, Della-Giustina includes the impact that the September 11 attacks have had on designing and structuring a safety, health and loss-control program.

In the wake of the September 11 attacks on the United States, businesses must now become proactive in their own security and planning for emergencies of any natureman-made or natural disasters, said Della-Giustina.That day changed life in the United States and throughout the world, making it a highly important inclusion in this edition.

Della-Giustina has a doctorate from Michigan State University and a masters from American International College, where he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees. He serves as editor of the Safety Forum, published by the School and Community Safety Society.

In addition, he has been a member of numerous committees with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and Committee on Fire Brigades. In September 2002, Della-Giustina was inducted into the Safety and Health Hall of Fame International at the National Safety Councils Annual Convention in Atlanta.
