Lace up your tennis shoes, and plan on joining Morgantown Mayor Ron Justice, Mountaineer mascot Brady Campbell, West Virginia University students and their families for WVU s first 5K Heart Walk Sunday (Sept. 2).

The walk, sponsored by the Student Government Association and Mountaineer Parents Club, steps off at 10 a.m. at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park and will proceed on the rail trail past Mountaineer Heritage Park.

More than 100 people are signed up for the eventpart of Family Weekend and the official kickoff of SGA Wellness Week activities (Sept. 2-6) at WVU .

Sabrina Cave, executive director of the Mountaineer Parents Club, said the event not only allows families to spend time together doing a fun, healthy activity; it also benefits the SGA Student Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Heart Walk is a wonderful collaborative project between the Student Government Association and the Mountaineer Parents Club,she said.Parents are happy to have the opportunity to participate in an event with their students that also allows them to support such a worthwhile cause.

SGA Student Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually to students who have leadership positions in campus organizations in remembrance of WVU students who have passed away, said Sarah McLean, SGA communications director.

All participants will receive a Heart Walk T-shirt and pedometer, and prizes will be awarded.

The entry fee is $20; WVU students are free. Checks should be made payable to the Student Government Association and mailed to: Mountaineer Parents Club, P.O. Box 6240, Morgantown, WV 26506 . Payment can be made at the event; however, advance registrations are preferred by completing the form at http://simpleforms.scripts.wvu.edu/parents/HeartWalk/ .

* SGA Wellness Week includes walking challenge

Sundays 5K Heart Walk is one of many activities WVU student government leaders have planned for Wellness Week (Sept. 2-6), McLean said. One of the highlights of the week will be a walking competition among SGA , the WVU Center for Civic Engagement and the Presidents Office. Beginning Sunday (Sept. 2), participants will keep track of their distances each day, and the group that logs the most steps during the week will be named the walk-off champions.

The objective of this friendly competition is to bring awareness to the benefits of exercise and healthy living,McLean said.

SGA Wellness Week is endorsed by the Universitys nutrition and wellness initiative. The activities are part of the Universitys Wellness and Nutrition Initiative, which was established to get students, faculty, staff and the WVU community more physically active and aware of campus wellness options.
