The West Virginia University School of Physical Education is celebrating its 75th anniversary this fall with a dynamic lineup of educators, coaches and former WVU athletes, as well as tours, lectures and other special events.

Alumni, faculty, staff and friends will kick-off the anniversary celebration with a dinner at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the Waterfront Place Hotel, Morgantown.

WVU mens basketball coach Bob Huggins will serve as the dinners keynote speaker. Huggins, a 1977 School of Physical Education graduate, will welcome guests at the event, which will showcase the schools history, vision and mission.

Dinner seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those wishing to participate must register by Friday, Aug. 31.

Dinner cost is $50 per person. Checks should be made payable to the WVU Foundation with a note in the memo field,75th anniversary dinner,and mailed to School of Physical Education, c/o Kimberly Cameon, P.O. Box 6116, Morgantown, WV 26506 -6116.

The 75th anniversary celebration will feature the School of Physical Educations research, innovative instruction and future growth and development,said Dana Brooks, dean.The goal of the series of events is to highlight the schools accomplishments and also demonstrate the vast resources available to faculty, staff and students.

The anniversary will celebrate important milestones in our history, while emphasizing the future of the school,Brooks noted.

All anniversary events, including the dinner, are open to the public.

  • 75th Anniversary Campus Tour, 10-11:30 a.m., Sept. 7, Mountainlair�€Tour will be conducted by J. William Douglas, former dean, WVU School of Physical Education. Douglas will also present a historical overview of the school, from 2-3 p.m. at the Erickson Alumni Center.
  • Sports Law Symposium, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Oct. 4-5, Lugar Courtroom, College of Law�€Topic of the symposium is,Reversing FieldExamining Commercialization, Labor and Race in Sports Law.This event is in partnership with the School of Physical Education and the College of Law.   • Wall of Honor Update and Reception, 3 p.m., Oct. 11, Jerry West Lounge, Coliseum�€Event will update and showcase the Wall of Honor at the School of Physical Education.
  • Title IX: Pioneer Women Coaches at WVU ,7 p.m., Oct. 11, Erickson Alumni Center�€Moderator will be Terri Howes, assistant athletic director, internal administrative services. Speakers are Martha Thorn, former womens tennis coach, Kittie Blakemore, former faculty member and womens basketball coach, Linda Burdette, womens gymnastics coach and assistant professor, physical education, and Donna Henderson, first womens swimming coach. Barbara Howe, director of Womens Studies at WVU , will provide summary comments for the Title IX presentation.
  • Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, 6:30 p.m. reception, 7:30 p.m. induction, Oct. 12, Erickson Alumni Center�€Induction ceremony for the School of Physical Educations Hall of Fame.
