The West Virginia University Community Arts Program will begin registering students next week for fall classes at the Creative Arts Center.
Registration for classes in music, art, theater and dance for students of all ages will be Aug. 13-31.
The program offers private music lessons in piano, organ, voice, jazz singing, brass, percussion, woodwind, strings, Suzuki violin, harp, guitar, theory and composition, jazz improvisation and conducting.
In addition, Community Arts Program classes available this fall include:
- Art Young Peoples Saturday Art Studio (ages 5-7 and 8-10). New classes this year include Mask Making for Kids (ages 5-7); Design Your Own Greeting Cards (ages 8-11); and Basket Weaving for Beginners (ages 10-adult).
- Theater Theater production:The Little Mermaid(ages 7-15). Students in this two-semester course will appear in public performances of the Hans Christian Anderson play,The Little Mermaid,March 7-9 at the Creative Arts Center.
- Dance Ballet (ages 4-8), Jazz Dance (ages 7-11), Creative Modern Dance (ages 3-4 and 5-7). Classes for adults include modern dance and ballroom dancing.
- Music Music for Babies (infants and toddlers), Explore and Enjoy (ages 2-3), Musicland Express (ages 4-6), Suzuki Violin (ages 4 and up), Beginning Group Piano for Kids (ages 6-9), Introductory Harp Class (all ages), Maestro in the Making (high school to adult), Jazz Improvisation (ages 9-adult), Steel Band Ensemble (ages 9-adult), Elementary Choir (ages 7-8), Youth Choir (ages 9-14), Community Arts Orchestra (junior high-adult), Music Theory I (ages 8-12), Music theory II (ages 13-adult), Music Together for Home Schoolers (elementary and middle school ages) and Community Arts Honors Ensemble Program (open by competitive audition). Music classes specifically for adults include Beginning Group Piano for Adults, Friday Music Club and the new WVU Community Arts Pops Choir.
Other Classes
Other classes for adults include a series of Saturday afternoon workshops that will feature:
- Conditioning Tips from the Dance World (for dancers and non-dancers) taught by Heather Ahern, WVU dance coordinator and dance professor
- Michelangelos David: The Most Remarkable Story Behind an Exceedingly Remarkable Sculpture taught by Bernie Schultz, art history professor and dean
- The Contemplative Power of Music taught by David Bess, music professor
- The Arts as a Profession, a panel discussion facilitated by Alison Helm, art professor; Keith Jackson, associate professor of music; and Ahern Alexander Technique (performance enhancement) workshops taught by certified instructor Lisa Levinson will include Introduction to Alexander Technique, Alexander Technique and Breathing, and Alexander Technique and Ergonomics.
The Community Arts Program Office will be closed Sept. 3 in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Office hours are 10 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday in Room 401A of the Creative Arts Center.
Students may register for classes after the official registration period ends, but a late fee will be in effect at that time.
