West Virginia University will welcome close to 4,700 new students to campus with a series of five New Student Convocations Aug. 18-19 at the Creative Arts Center.
The events will provide freshmen and transfer students an introduction to student life, an opportunity to meet their classmates and receive personal advice from University leaders.
The students will be greeted by incoming President-elect Mike Garrison who will share his perspective of the opportunities that lay ahead for them.
I am thrilled to begin this new journey with the Class of 2011,Garrison said.Its an honor for me to welcome them to campus and challenge them to take advantage of the many opportunities that the University has to offer. The New Student Convocation is the first step in their introduction to the community that is West Virginia University.
Representatives from the Student Government Association and Gold and Blue Student Ambassadors will also be on hand to welcome students to the event. Attendees will receive a commemorative class-ring key chain and T-shirt with their class year to show their pride and unity.
Parking at the Coliseum is free for commuter students. Transportation will be provided for students to and from the residence halls and Creative Arts Center.
New and transfer students are required to attend a session for University 101 orientation class. Each group will be assigned to a specific session depending on their residence hall.

- Saturday Aug. 18, 4 p.m.commuter and transfer students
- Sunday, Aug. 19, 11 a.m.students assigned to Arnold Hall, Arnold Apartments, Sterling Ridge Apartments, Fieldcrest Hall or Pierpont Apartments
- Sunday, Aug 19, 12:30 p.m.students assigned to Boreman Halls (North and South), Spruce House, Bennett Tower or Lyon Tower
- Sunday, Aug. 19, 2:00 p.m.students assigned to Braxton Tower, Brooke Tower or Dadisman Hall
- Sunday, Aug. 19. 3:30 p.m.students assigned to Lincoln Hall, Stalnaker Hall or Summit Hall
