Thomas Dorer, West Virginia Universitys general counsel for the past five years, is leaving the post to take a similar position at the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Conn., President David C. Hardesty Jr. announced.

At Hartford, Dorer will serve as general counsel and secretary of the university. Hell start those duties by Sept. 4.

Tom Dorer came to WVU dedicated to higher education and experienced in the issues that surround the modern university,Hardesty said.His academic preparation for the job was excellent, and his experience had prepared him for the job. The issues that he has helped us to resolve have been numerous and substantial, and all of us appreciate his efforts to provide quality legal services to an engaged leadership team. He will do an excellent job at the University of Hartford, for the entire university community and its board.

Dorer was named general counsel at WVU in 2002. Prior to that, he served as associate counsel at the University of Massachusetts for eight years, and before that, as an associate attorney with the Washington, D.C., law firm of Dow, Lohnes, and Albertson.

Dorer received his bachelors degree from Brown University in 1984 and a masters degree in education from Harvard in 1987. He earned his law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley in 1990.
