Chances are youve said it. If not, youve probably heard it.I have nothing to wear!
Its a dilemma most women have faced. All of your clothes suddenly look boring, out-of-date or dont fit. Dont give up so easilya West Virginia University graduate and a new television show on the cable channel TLC are about to help change that.
Farai Simoyi, a 2005 graduate of the Textiles, Apparel and Merchandising Program (TAM) in the Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences, will be featured as one of the young and upcoming fashion designers in two upcoming episodes ofIve Got Nothing To Wear.
Following in the footsteps of TLC s hitWhat Not To Wear, the show features one stylist, one designer and three design prodigies who, in three days, revamp the wardrobes of fashion challenged women. The women learn to combine classic pieces with theirnewwardrobe to create stylish outfits.
Currently living in Brooklyn, N.Y., and an assistant fashion designer for a womens contemporary clothing line, Simoyi actually stumbled upon the shows auditions by accident.
I answered a vague advertisement for young designers and actually thought I was going to a job interview. Once I got to the studio I realized I was auditioning for a new television show, she said.
Not wanting to let her nervousness show, Simoyi used her audition to demonstrate her passion for design.
I told them about myself, my future goals and how I got into design. I just wanted them to see my personality and get a sense of my drive for the career path Ive chosen, she said.
Originally from Zimbabwe, Simoyis flare for fashion began at a young age.
My aunt started a womens lingerie line and she would always have heaps of fabric scraps. She would let me rummage through the bags and I would take as much as my little hands could carry to make skirts and dresses for my dolls, she said.
Sewing was just a hobby growing up. She never thought she could make a career out of it until she discovered WVU s TAM program during her sophomore year of college.
Every day I use so much of the information I learned in the program,Simoyi said.I am so grateful to the professors that I had because they really cared about what their students learned and they wanted to prep us for the fashion world.
Simoyi believes programs likeIve Got Nothing To Wearallow young designers to see that they can break into the competitive fashion industry.
If you stay focused and go for what you want, anything can be achieved, she said.
As for whether her designs were chosen by the women, she says,Its a big secret! You just have to watch the show.
Simoyis episodes will air June 22 and July 6 at 10 p.m. on TLC . Check local cable listings for the TLC channel in your area.
