The West Virginia Forest Stewardship Program Education&Outreach Project is coordinating two, one-day workshops on forest taxation and estate planning, June 26 and 27 in Clay and Wood Counties.

The workshops are designed to provide private forest landowners with practical information about forest taxation and financial aspects of passing forestland onto heirs or other stewards. Some of the topics to be covered include recordkeeping, operating and management expenses, land basis, passive losses, and capital gains from timber sales, as well as cost-share expenses, inheritance taxes, and conservation easements. There will also be a session providing tools and techniques for involving the next generation in forest management.

The first workshop will be at the Big Otter Community Center in Big Otter, Clay County, Tuesday, June 26. The second workshop will be at the Judge Black Annex in Parkersburg, Wood County, Wednesday, June 27. Both workshops run from 9 a.m.3 p.m.

A workshop fee of $20 includes materials, lunch and other refreshments.

The deadline for registration is Thursday, June 21.

The workshops are sponsored by the West Virginia Division of Forestry, the West Virginia University Extension Service and Division of Forestry&Natural Resources. The West Virginia Forest Stewardship Program is funded through a grant from the USDA Forest Service.
