Officers with West Virginia Universitys Department of Public Safety will be on the lookout for seat-belt violators from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday (May 29) on Evansdale Drive near the Evansdale Campus residence halls.

The annual seat-belt enforcementorClick It or Ticketcampaignis part of the Governors Highway Safety Program to encourage motorists, especially teens, to buckle up for safety.

DPS officers will be checking to make sure drivers and their passengers are wearing seat belts and passing out safety information at the checkpoint, Sgt. Richard McGee said. Violators may be issued a citation.

Random seat-belt checks will also take place in various campus locations Tuesday (May 29) through Friday (June 1).

In recent years, DPS has been recognized for its participation in the program, with an 85 percent rate of seat-belt use.

Safety belt enforcement is not about writing tickets, but about saving lives, McGee said.

There have been many incidents where an officer issued a citation to someone who wasnt buckled up or didnt have his or her child properly fastened in a child safety seatonly to have that person or child survive a serious crash shortly after the ticket was issued, he noted.
