Move over Emmy and Grammy, and make room for the Swiggy.

The award with the funny-sounding name recognizes excellence in Web design.

Created by the West Virginia Statewide Internet Group, or SWIG , the purpose of the Swiggy awards is to recognize state organizationsefforts in creating and maintaining well-designed, helpful and accessible Web sites for the citizens of West Virginia, said Sarah Barnes, SWIG chair and a WVU Web developer.

SWIG is currently accepting nominations for the awards, which will be given to the top three Web sites that exemplify design excellence in state government, K-12 schools or higher education.

The nomination deadline is July 17, and the winners will be honored at the annual Statewide Technology Conference awards luncheon Aug. 16 in Charleston.

An award-winning Web site should be aesthetically pleasing and easy to use, Barnes said.

For state and federal organizations, Web sites must also be accessiblemeaning they can be used by people with all types of disabilities, she added.

SWIG is a user group of the state Information Technology Council. Members include Web developers and administrators at state agencies, K-12 schools or institutions of higher education.
