West Virginia Universitys Community Arts Program is offering fun, artistic summer classes for children and adults at the Creative Arts Center.

The program offers private lessons for children and adults in piano, organ, Suzuki violin, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, voice, jazz singing, harp and guitar. Summer registration will be May 14-June 1. Classes begin the week of May 21 and end Aug. 11.

The summer session is flexible to accommodate various summer schedules. Students may register for any number of lessons throughout the session, depending on teacher availability.

Summer classes include:

Music

A Star is Born I, (ages 6-7), A Star is Born II (ages 8-10) and A Star is Born III (ages 11-17) are for children who love to sing. Classes will include training for healthy, life-long singing and also performance opportunities for solos, duets and ensembles. Age-appropriate literature will include musical theatre selections, folk songs of various nations and art songs. Some movement will be added to many songs.

I Love to Sing (adults 18 and older) is a class for students who enjoy group and solo singing while learning proper singing technique. The repertoire will feature light and fun musical theatre and movie music and some arts songs, as well as classical music. The students will assist in choosing the songs they would like to learn.

Harp On It! is a six-week introductory harp class is for all ages and will meet for one hour weekly, with a limit of three students per class. Class times will be arranged. The students will study hand position and simple tunes. No musical background is necessary and a practice harp is also available.

Art

Summer Art Camp (ages 5-12) will be June 11-13. Students in the camp will explore exciting art making techniques combined with outside adventures. Activities will include sun printing, drawing, flower fun, clay adventures and painting.

Dance

Beginning/Intermediate Jazz Technique (ages 9-12) will focus on beginning to intermediate jazz technique, as well as learning different jazz variations.

Creative Modern Dance I (ages 3-5) and Creative Modern Dance II (ages 6-8) are fun classes for young dancers to learn movement and use it creatively. The classes will include technique as well as improvisation and creative dance. The main focus is to let the students establish their own unique dance style and to use it with confidence.

Modern Dance for Adults will focus on anatomically sound approaches to warming up the body, musicality, basic dance vocabulary and self-expression.
