West Virginia University is hosting hundreds of incoming students and their families during several New Student Orientation sessions in June. The sessions introduce students to academic programs, key faculty and staff members and student support services in an effort to create a smooth transition to University life for incoming students.
This is the best way to get prepared for the fall and we encourage anyone new to the University to participate, said Courtney Jennings, interim coordinator of New Student Orientation.During orientation, students can learn about many of the services that are available and wrap-up some of the details before the rush of the semester begins.
The sessions provide information on career counseling, financial aid, scholarships, dining plans, student organizations, mental health facilities and residence hall supportas well as an optional campus tour. Students will also be issued their student identification card, meet with their academic advisor to register for classes, complete placement examinations and have an opportunity to purchase textbooks in advance.
They are open to traditional freshman entering the University directly from high school, students transferring from other colleges and universities and nontraditional studentsstudents who are over the age of 23. Parents are also encouraged to attend to learn more about the experiences their students will go through and services that are available to themlike the Mountaineer Parents Club and Fall Family Weekend activities.
New Student Orientation offers three types of sessions including a standard, one-day session; a two-day overnight sessionfor students that need to take more than one placement exam or would like an extended tour of campus and a stay in the residence hall; and a program specifically for transfer and non-traditional students.
The dates for standard sessions are June 4-7, June 13-15, June 20-22 and June 27. Dates for the extended programs are June 11-12, June 18-19 and June 25-26. The remaining nontraditional and transfer student session will be June 8.
