West Virginia University invites the community to get in step with diversity during a very special musical performance Saturday (April 28) in downtown Morgantown.

Battle of the Greeks 2007: WVU s Official Annual Spring Step Showwill be from 6-10 p.m. in Morgantowns landmark Metropolitan Theatre at 369 High St. Admission is free.

Step shows are elaborate productions built around step-dancing, orstepping,as the art is formally known. With its roots in the African Welly boot dance, stepping was once a staple in traditionally black colleges and universities.

These days, its more about multiculturalism. Five WVU fraternities and sororities and others from schools outside of West Virginia will do routines on the Met Theatre stage for the evening sponsored by the Universitys national Pan-Hellenic Council.

A lot of times people are actually surprised when they see how diverse West Virginia University is,said Karen Geiger, a WVU graduate student who is helping organize Saturdays show. The energy from the audience is something else.

She knows all about that. Shes performed in several step shows during her undergraduate years here.

The crowd gets you going, she said. Its an absolute blast being up there.
