The West Virginia University Student Recreation Center is offering a fun and educational summer program for children in June and part of July.

Mountaineer Adventure DAY Camp will host children, ages 8-12, who are interested in a variety of activities.

There will be two sessions of the camp, lasting approximately two weeks each. Session one will run from June 11-22, with no camp Monday, June 18. Session two will run from June 25-July 6, with no camp Wednesday, July 4.

Registration deadline is May 25. Parents are encouraged to register children soon, as slots are filling quickly, said Sherri Restauri, program manager.

We get a lot of positive feedback from children and parents,Restauri said. Our camp introduces kids to positive activities that might be outside of what they normally do. It fits with the mission of WVU in terms of service.

Camp organizers have designed a summer camp program with a teaching environment that promotes safety and fun while fostering an atmosphere of fairness and mutual respect. The camp will teach basic outdoor skills in activities such as climbing, camping, hiking, paddling, caving and much more.

Camp staff members encourage children to learn from their experiences, providing a forum where participants gain a variety of skills, including how to communicate effectively and get along with others. The program is designed for all levels of skill and ability.

Outdoor areas that will be visited include Coopers Rock, Cheat Lake, Chestnut Ridge Park, the Tygart River and Laurel Caverns. Campers will also visit the Mountain Lion Sanctuary and the Carnegie Science Center.

Outdoor recreation activities will include canoeing, camping, caving and hiking. Campers will also use state-of-the-art recreational facilities at WVU s Student Recreation Center. They will also have an opportunity to learn climbing skills on the Rec Centers climbing wall as well as try their hands at scuba diving, kayaking and swimming in the Recs aquatic area.

Hours of operation of the camp are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Camp cost is $355 for each session. Each session can accommodate 40 campers.
