Daniel O. Bernstine, current president of Portland State University, has withdrawn his candidacy for president of West Virginia University, according to Board of Governors Chairman Steve Goodwin.

In a phone call to Goodwin late Thursday afternoon, Bernstine indicated that while the position offered a great opportunity, it was not the right fit for him at this time.

Goodwin noted,”We’re certainly disappointed because he was an outstanding candidate and, along with the other two finalists, offered a great choice for the Board of Governors. We are sorry he has chosen to withdraw, but certainly wish him all the best.”
