William P. Getty, president of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, will speak onThe Business of PhilanthropyThe Philanthropy of BusinessTuesday, March 20, at West Virginia University.

His talk will begin at 7 p.m. in Room 459 at the College of Business and Economics. The presentation is part of the Acordia/Royal&SunAlliance Distinguished Lecture Series. It is free and open to the public.

Since 1994, Getty has served as a trustee of the Benedum Foundation, a major donor to projects benefiting West Virginia. He is a member of the steering committee of West Virginia: A Vision Shared, a statewide economic development initiative; a member of the governing board of Imagine West Virginia, an independent policy research institute; and a member of the advisory board of the Partnerships for Teacher Quality Initiative, which advances the professional development school model of teacher preparation in West Virginia.

Getty graduated from Trinity College and Georgetown University Law Center. He practiced law with the Pittsburgh firm of Meyer, Unkovic&Scott from 1970 until 1999, when he became president of the Benedum Foundation.

The Acordia series, formerly known as the McDonough Caperton Distinguished Lecture Series, has been presented by the College of Business and Economics since 1984.
