Eventcanceled at Creative Arts Center
The guest faculty recital and master classes by flutist Beth Chandler and pianist Gabriel Dobner (originally scheduled for 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. today, March 1) has been canceled. No rescheduling of these events has been announced.
Flutist Beth Chandler and pianist Gabriel Dobner, both faculty members of the James Madison University (JMU) School of Music in Harrisonburg, Va., will present a guest artist recital at 4 p.m. Thursday (March 1) at the West Virginia UniversityCreative Arts Center.
The program will be in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (Room 200A). It is free and open to the public.
Following the recital, Chandler and Dobner will present master classes beginning at 5:30 p.m. that are also free and open to the public. Chandler will present a flute class in Room 200B, and Dobner will present a German Lieder class for pianists and singers in Bloch Hall. Both classes will also include performances by WVU music students.
The recital program will includeSonata in B Minor, BWV 1030 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750);Three American Pieces for Flute and Pianoby Lukas Foss (b. 1922);To Greet the Sun, for solo fluteby Katherine Hoover (b. 1937); andSonata in D, Op. 94by Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953).
Chandler enjoys an active career as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player and teacher. She is also a member of the Montpelier Wind Quintet, the faculty woodwind quintet in residence at JMU .
She has been the winner of numerous national and international competitions, including the 1999 Myrna Brown Artist Competition and the 1999 Flute Talk Competition. She was also a semifinalist in the Concert Artists Guild 2001 International Competition, the 2000 National Flute Association Piccolo Artist Competition and the 1998 NFA Young Artist Competition.
Chandler was the 1998-99 Mary Louise Remy Endowed Philanthropical Educational Organization (P.E.O.) Scholar.
In addition,she has been a Fulbright Scholar, through which she studied with Trevor Wye in Kent, England. She earned a doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a masters degree from New England Conservatory and a bachelors degree from Baylor University.
She currently is a member of the National Flute Associations Board of Directors.
Dobner first appeared in concert in Europe in 1991 as part of a chamber music festival with various members of the Villa Musica Ensemble based in Mainz, Germany. He spent eight years in Germany during 1993-2001, after having been awarded a German Academic Exchange Scholarship (DAAD) to study Lied (European classical music songs) accompanying in Munich with Professor Helmut Deutsch.
The following year, Dobner won the special piano prize in the International Hans Pfitzner Lieder Competition in Munich.
While living in Augsburg, Germany, Dobner performed in many of the major concert venues in Europe and Japan, including Munich, Dresden, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Cologne, Nuremberg, Vienna, Zrich, Tokyo and Nagoya.
Dobner is also part of a piano duo with his wife, Lori Piitz. They have presented concerts throughout Germany, Canada and the United States, most recently at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Dobner joined the faculty at James Madison University in the fall of 2001.
