The West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra will feature music in memory of Professor Emeritus Herman Godes during a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre at the Creative Arts Center.

The program will feature Gabriel FauresElegie for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 24,featuring Professor of Music William Skidmore as cello soloist. Godes, a prominent pianist and teacher, died Feb. 3 at his home in Cookeville, Tenn.

Other selections will includeOverture to Le Roi dYsby Edouard Lalo andSymphony No. 2 in B minorby Alexander Borodin.

The WVU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Harvey Felder, is recognized as one of the outstanding university orchestras in the East.

In addition to its many concerts, the Orchestra accompanies oratorio, opera and ballet, along with student-faculty and guest soloists. It has performed by invitation at many professional music conferences in the United States.

Felder, who is director of orchestral studies at WVU , has also served as music director of the Tacoma Symphony, assistant conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony and conductor of special projects with the Atlanta Symphony.

He earned degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan.

During the 1991Carnegie Hall at 100celebration, he made his Carnegie Hall debut, conducting the American Symphony Orchestra. This performance led to engagements with symphonies throughout the United States, as well as in Mexico, Costa Rica and Japan.
