The public is invited to attend a free master class by Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra oboist Cynthia Koledo DeAlmeida, from 3:30-5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 17, in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall at the Creative Arts Center.
The class will feature a performance by DeAlmeida, as well as WVU oboe majors.
Since joining the Pittsburgh Symphony, DeAlmeida has been featured as soloist in concertos by Bach, Haydn, Vaughan-Williams, Strauss and Mozart.
She has performed as soloist with Vladimir Spivakov and Andrés Crdenes.
DeAlmeidas first solo CD,Classic Discoveries for Oboe,was released in November 2002 on the Boston Records label. Her CD was hailed by American Record Guide asa masterly recordingDeAlmeida is simply one of the finest exponents of the instrument anywhere.
DeAlmeida has been a faculty member of the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Calif. since 2002.
In Pittsburgh she teaches at Carnegie Mellon University where she is the coordinator of the Woodwind Department. DeAlmeida has given master classes in the United States, Europe, the Far East and South America. She is a frequent guest artist at the annual convention of the International Double Reed Society.
On the evening of Saturday, Feb. 17, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Toronto Symphony music director Peter Oundjian, will return to Morgantown for the third and final concert in the Torray Symphony Series.
The performance begins at 8:15 p.m. at the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre and will feature the melodicRainbow Bodyby PSO composer of the year Christopher Theofanidis, Mahlers epicSymphony No. 1,and world-renowned pianist Yefim Bronfman performing BeethovensPiano Concerto No. 1.
The Torray Symphony Series is brought to the Creative Arts Center through a partnership between the WVU College of Creative Arts and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The series is sponsored by Robert and Nancy Torray, with additional support from William and Loulie Canady of Morgantown, in memory of their daughter Valerie.
