West Virginia Universitys Female Majority Leadership Alliance will presentThe Vagina MonologuesFeb. 23-25 in the main auditorium (G24)of Eiesland Hall on the Downtown Campus.
The Obie award-winning episodic play by Eve Ensler was written to
represent womens experiences both positive and violent, including experiences of domestic violence and sexual assault.
This play is based on real-life experiences of women,said Lauren Wallace, president of WVU FMLA .We really want to raise awareness about sexual violence against women.
The productions cast is composed entirely of WVU students.
The play premiered at the off-Broadway Westside Theater in 1996. It was originally performed as a one-person show by Ensler, sharing the views of various women.
The production has been staged internationally, and a television versionwhich featured Enslerwas produced by the cable TV channel HBO .
This years proceeds will benefit Morgantowns Rape and Domestic Violence Information Center, FMLA and the V-Day international project supporting Japanesecomfort women.For more information about V-Day, go to www.vday.org .
Tickets can be bought in advance for $5 at FMLA booths in the Mountainlair on Feb.14, 15, 19, 20 and 23 from 9 a.m.4 p.m.
Tickets are $8 at the door for the 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday performances; $5 for the 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
This will be a whole new dialogue for women. We want to encourage anyone on campus or in the community to come,Wallace said.
