A West Virginia University student who died over the weekend will be remembered Friday (Jan. 19) with a bell-ringing ceremony and candlelight service.

Jason Simmons, 21, a junior finance major from Franklin, died Sunday (Jan. 14) following a camping accident at Blue Hole in Preston County.

WVU s Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity will hold a bell-ringing ceremony at 11:50 a.m. Friday in front of Elizabeth Moore Hall on the Downtown Campus.

Family, friends and members of the University community are welcome to attend the service. Individuals who would like to speak should contact Alpha Phi Omega at 304-293-3071 or Stephen Fernandez, bell-ringing coordinator, at 304-444-2147.

That evening, WVU Student Grotto (caving club)to which Simmons belongedwill have a candlelight service at 7 p.m. at Woodburn Circle.

We wanted to provide a way for people who might be uncomfortable attending the funeral or unable to attend to pay their respects,said Kyle McMillan, president of the student group.

A local pastor will lead the service.

Counseling remains available to students through the Carruth Center, 304-293-4431, in the Student Services Building next to the Mountainlair.
