West Virginia Universitys Community Arts Program is currently registering students for spring 2007 classes at the Creative Arts Center. Students of all ages have the opportunity to study music, theatre, dance and the visual arts. The last day of registration is Friday, Jan. 19. Students may be registered from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in room 401A of the CAC .

Classes include:

  • Theatre The fall class, Peter Pan (ages 10-15), continues. There will also be a new two-day workshop, Let the Felting Begin, which explores the unique technique of Nano felting. Participants in the felting workshop will learn to turn a plain silk scarf into a unique piece of wearable art by combining it with colorful wool fibers.
  • Art Young Peoples Saturday Art Studio (ages 5-8 and 9-14).
  • Dance Ballet I (ages 4-5); Ballet II (ages 6-7); Dance for the Young (ages 4-5); Creative Modern/Modern Dance (ages 6-7). A new class offered this semester is Lets Dance Like the Stars! Ballroom Dancing for Adults. Dancers will enjoy learning the fox trot, cha-cha-cha, waltz and tango. If time permits, they may also learn other dance styles, such as the samba and swing dancing.
  • Music Music for Babies (infants and toddlers); Explore&Enjoy (ages 2-3); Musicland Express (ages 4-6); Beginning Group Piano (ages 6-9); Percussion Ensemble (ages 11-adult); Steel Band Ensemble (ages 9-adult); Community Arts Orchestra (intermediate to advanced); Elementary Choir (ages 7-8); Youth Choir (ages 9-14); Flute Ensemble (junior high to adult); Introductory Harp Class (all ages); Suzuki Violin (ages 4 and up); Maestro in the Making (conducting class); Theory (ages 8-12 and 13-adult); Group Piano (adults); and Alexander Technique Workshops (performance enhancement).

New music classes include Friday Music Club for Adults, a 10-week class that allows participants to have fun playing Orff and percussion instruments to accompany the singing of traditional songs. No previous experience is necessary and there are no assignments to practice at home. Just come and enjoy.

Another new class is Introduction to Music Therapy, a five-week class providing an introductory orientation to music therapy in terms of its history, theoretical foundations, scope of current clinical practice and relationship to other health care professions.

Private lessons are available in piano, organ, voice, brass, woodwind, percussion, strings, guitar, jazz singing, jazz improvisation, harp, theory and composition, conducting, music therapy, and the Alexander Technique.
