The NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium at West Virginia University is offering internships, research grants and other opportunities for college students and faculty members.

Opportunities for West Virginia students in summer 2007 include internships at National Aeronautics and Space Administration facilities and several high-tech companies in the state. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, Jan. 16.

The consortium, housed in WVU s College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, will hold several open houses to help students with the application process. The consortium will hold four open houses in December and January to provide assistance and information. The open houses will be held in Room G68 of the Engineering Sciences Building on the following dates:

  • 12-5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12
  • 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13
  • 12-5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9
  • 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10

Additionally, the consortium is soliciting research proposals from faculty and students for a wide variety of programs for the 2007-2008 school year, including: Research Initiation Grants; Joint University-Industry Research Opportunity Program; Summer Faculty Fellowship Program at the NASA IV &V Facility; Research Seed Grants, Travel Grant Program; College-University Collaboration Program; Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program; Graduate Research Fellowship Program; College Course Development Grant Program; Pre-College Outreach and Curriculum Development Program; and Public Extension and Outreach Grant Program.

The application deadline for all of the above programs is 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 7.

The consortium was established in 1991 to enhance the states competitiveness in math, science, engineering and technology research, and to promote aerospace-related research and education. The consortium is composed of eleven colleges and universities, with WVU as the lead institution.

Other consortium members include Bethany College, Bluefield State College, Fairmont State University, Marshall University, Shepherd University, West Virginia State University, WVU Institute of Technology, West Virginia Wesleyan College, West Liberty State College and Wheeling-Jesuit University. Students who are U.S. citizens and faculty members from these institutions are eligible for consortium programs.
