Ten students are vying to become Homecoming royalty at West Virginia University.

Homecoming queen candidates are Danielle Boyd, Charleston; Jessica Bradley, Pelham, Ala.; Jennifer Redmond, Logan; Kristen Statler, Core; and Somer Strothers, Wheeling.

Candidates for Homecoming king are Luke Jackson, Middlebourne; Thomas Moore, Morgantown; Grant Stetz, Johnstown, Pa.; Ryan Ursal, Slanesville; and Chris Willis, Independence.

Online voting begins at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, and ends at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, via the MIX (Mountaineer Information Xpress).

The entire court will ride in the Homecoming parade Friday, Oct. 13. The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Spruce and Willey streetsdue to ongoing construction on High Street.

The 2006 Homecoming king and queen will be crowned during a special halftime ceremony at the WVU -Syracuse football game, which kicks off at noon Saturday, Oct. 14, at Milan Puskar Stadium.

Here is a snapshot of each candidate:

Homecoming King Candidates

Luke Jackson is a senior occupational therapy major from Middlebourne. He plans to graduate with a masters degree in May of 2008.

As a freshman, he served as vice president of Arnold Hall Council and a member of the Residential Hall Association, working with students on residential life issues and concerns.

For the past two years, he has led the Occupational Therapy Class of 2008 as president and also been a member of the Student Occupational Therapy Association.

Jackson supports the Mountaineers as an athlete on the WVU cheerleading squad.

He enjoys community service and has volunteered at HealthSouth Mountainview Rehabilitation and Ruby Memorial hospitals.

Jacksons parents are Tim and Lisa Jackson.

Thomas Moore is a senior music education major from Morgantown.

He is a four-year member ofThe Pride of West VirginiaMountaineer Marching Band and participates in the WVU Mens Lacrosse Club and Mountaineer Maniacs.

In addition, he is involved with the Sigma Theta Epsilon National Christian Service Fraternity, National Exemplary Scholars in Service, Music Educators National Conference and Alpha Lambda Delta honor fraternity.

Moore serves as an assistant varsity coach for the Morgantown High School boys lacrosse team, trumpet section instructor for the MHS Red and BlueMarching Band, assistant scoutmaster and an assistant mate for Sea Scouts.

His parents are Tom and Rebecca Moore.

Grant Stetz is a senior international studies major from Johnstown, Pa.

He is the vice president of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and was a member of the WVU Mens Varsity Wrestling Team.

Stetz is involved with the German, Wrestling and Golf clubs. He also enjoys participating in the Outlet, the student film club at WVU , in which he is the defending Halloween Film Festival champion.

As a sophomore, Stetz was active in the Student Government Association, and as a junior, he was inducted into the National Exemplary Scholars in Service program.

In his spare time, he has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and the Monongalia County Humane Society.

His parents are Edward and Valarie Stetz.

Ryan Ursal * is a senior mechanical engineering major from Slanesville.

A member of the Challenge X Engineering Team, he and his classmates are re-engineering a Chevrolet Equinox with the goal of improving its performance and efficiency.

Ursal is an active brother in the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and holds a cabinet position as the corresponding secretary.

Aside from Greek life, he is a member of the West Virginia Mens Rugby Club and previously served as its social administrator.

Ursals honors include being named a 2005 McNair Scholar, which required him to conduct graduate research at an undergraduate level.

His parents are Michael and Ninoca Oster.

*Chris Willis is a graduate student from Independence. He is studying industrial relations in WVU s College of Business and Economics.

He is a graduate assistant at the WVU Fire Safety Training Center and plans to finish his masters degree in May.

As an undergraduate, he was named 2006 Mr. Mountaineer and elected to the Student Government Association Board of Governors.

With the help of friends, he helped found five student organizations. He also voiced student concerns to committees such as the Advisory Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs.

His parents are Thomas and Pamela Willis.

Homecoming Queen Candidates

Danielle Boyd is a senior English major from Charleston.

During her time at WVU , she has been active in the National Collegiate Scholars in Service, Sigma Tau Delta, Student Government Association and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

For the past year, Boyd has served on the Student Government Association Board of Governors, raising awareness about tutoring opportunities and promoting Greek unity.

She is currently working on West Virginia Greeks Support Our Troops Week, a joint project with students at Marshall University, to raise money to send care packages overseas to soldiers from West Virginia.

Along with these activities, she is a member of the Honors College and a Deans List honoree.

Her mother is Elizabeth Hamilton-Boyd.

Jessica Bama Bradley is a senior public relations major from Pelham, Ala.

Bradley is chapter president of the Public Relations Student Society of America and a proud Mountaineer Maniac.

Among her other leadership roles are event planning coordinator for the Student Government Association Public Relations Team and Mountaineer Visitation Day tour guide.

Bradley is one of the founders of Holding Every Life Precious, a suicide awareness and prevention organization affiliated with the WVU Carruth Center.

In addition, she has been an assistant in the WVU Department of English and a mentor in the School of Journalism.

Her mother is Mary Ellen Bradley.

Jennifer Redmond is a senior exercise physiology from Logan. She plans to attend physical therapy school next year.

Redmonds leadership roles have included being a Mountaineer Visitation Day tour guide and Mountainlair Advisory Council member.

Her resume also lists involvement with Pi Beta Phi, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, National Exemplary Scholars in Service, Exercise Physiology Club, Honors College, Italian American Organization, Phi Kappa Phi, Institute for Human Dignity and Student Health Advisory Board.

Redmond assists with Muscular Dystrophy Association events and is a hospital volunteer.

At WVU , she has earned both Deans and Presidents List honors.

Her parents are Marie and Randy Redmond.

Kristen Statler is a senior chemistry major from Core. After she graduates, she plans to attend the WVU School of Medicine.

During her four years at WVU , she has been active in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Alpha Epsilon Delta, the preprofessional health fraternity. Through AED , Statler keeps busy as a Childrens Hospital volunteer and social chair.

Besides these activities, she has been part of WVU s chemistry fraternity, Phi Lambda Upsilon, and she is involved in undergraduate research and tutoring. She also serves as the membership chair of Mortar Board, the senior honorary fraternity.

In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering for the Ronald McDonald House and serving as a secretary for her hometown church.

Her parents are Joe and Louie Statler.

Somer Strothers is a senior dental hygiene student from Wheeling.

During her college career, she has been actively involved in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., National Exemplary Scholars in Service and the Student American Dental Hygiene Association.

Strothers has taken part in the Special Smiles Program for Special Olympics, breast cancer awareness, Make A Wish Foundation and numerous other community programs. Altogether, she has logged more than 300 hours of volunteer service.

She has also been a cheering coach for the 612 MAC Community Center Summer Program.

Her parents are Lisa Fain and Laun Strothers.
