Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher? Do you look for emergency exits when you enter a restaurant? Do you have an emergency escape route in your own home or residence?

If you answered no to any of these questions, try to stop by West Virginia UniversitysUp in Smokeprogram being offered from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Organized by WVU s Environmental Health and Safety unit, the event is offered at two campus locationsthe tennis courts at the Evansdale Residential Complex and an area near the Engineering PRT station.

WVU s program, designed to promote fire and life safety awareness and to educate students and employees about the hazards of fire, earned a 2006 national award from the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association.

This years awareness events will feature a trailer designed for fire fighter training that will be filled with fogvia a smoke simulatorso that people can try to navigate through it, said Roger Wright, EH&S training specialist.

A residential sprinkler trailer will also demonstrate how quickly fires can spread and how effective a sprinkler system can be, and individuals can use fire extinguishers to try to put out the simulated fire.

Chairs and curtains will also be treated with a fabric fire guard to show how fire resistant materials work, and displays will be available to demonstrate how fires commonly get started in campus settings.
