Two ranking Mountain State lawmakers are visiting West Virginia University on Tuesday, Sept. 26, to talk about internship opportunities in the state Legislature.

Sen. Roman Prezioso, D-Marion, who chairs the Senate Health and Human Resources Committee, will be on campus along with House Majority Leader Rick Staton, D-Wyoming.

The pair will speak to Dr. Chris Pleins Public Administration 640 class, where theyll discuss the particulars of Walter Rollins Scholars and Robert W. Burk Jr. Student Internships programs.

Six students are selected for the Rollins program and four from the Burk program are selected to assist the leadership of the House and Senate. Any graduate degree student can qualify for either one of the internships.

An informational session on all of WVU s internship programs will follow at 3:15 p.m. in Room 400, Knapp Hall on the Downtown Campus. That gathering is sponsored by WVU s Division of Public Administration and the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.

Other internships:

  • Lewis McManus Fellowship, a year-long appointment open to a second year Masters of Public Administration student who is committed to public service after graduation;
  • Judith A. Herndon Fellowship, open to full-time graduate students of all majors who are interested in assisting a lawmaker for the duration of West Virginias 60-day Legislative session;
  • Frasure-Singleton internship, a week-long program during which undergraduate students of all majors are assigned to a lawmaker to learn more about the Legislative process; and
  • Legislative Information Journalism Internship, open to undergraduate or graduate journalism students who will work for the Legislatures Reference and Information Center.

Public Administration chair Plein praised the states Legislative Internship Programs for their comprehensive offerings.

The programs are nationally recognized for their quality of placement and the wide range of experiences made available to students,he said.

Prezioso represents West Virginias 13th Senatorial District and served as a state delegate from 1989-96 before being elected to Senate.

Staton, a 22nd District delegate, also serves on the House Political Subdivisions and House Rules committees.
