Thirty West Virginia student leaders are getting help with their college costs thanks to the West Virginia University Mountaineer Parents Club and the Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund of the WVU Alumni Association.


The high school seniors �€all student body presidents �€have been awarded scholarships valued at $1,000 ($500 per semester) for their freshman year.


Since it was started six years ago, the Mountaineer Parents Club Scholarship program has provided financial assistance to about 160 students, said Sabrina Cave, Mountaineer Parents Club director.


�€?We are pleased to be partnering with the WVU Alumni Association to provide scholarships that encourage outstanding West Virginia students to attend the University,�€? she said. �€?As student body presidents, these seniors have made a difference on their campuses. We congratulate them on their past accomplishments and look forward to their future success at WVU .�€?

Formed in 1995 by WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr., the Mountaineer Parents Club connects families with their children’s college experience.


The organization �€under the full-time volunteer leadership of his wife, Susan �€currently involves more than 14,000 members, 66 local clubs and 15 state chairs. There are also three international chairs in South America, Canada and Germany .


Besides providing scholarships to West Virginia high school student body presidents, the Mountaineer Parents Club offers a newsletter with timely information about campus programs and services, a parent advocate who answers the Mountaineer Parents Club Helpline (1-800-WVU-0096), get-acquainted events such as Summer Send-offs and Winter Fests hosted by local clubs and Parent Electronic News e-mail updates.


Other ways the club reaches out to students and parents include coordinating bus service to students going home for holiday breaks, parking passes for move-in and move-out days, and discounts for parents at downtown businesses.
