Victims of the Holocaust will be remembered by members of the West Virginia University and Morgantown communities April 19-20 in front of the WVU Mountainlair on the Downtown Campus.

The Yom Hashoah International Holocaust Memorial Program will begin at noon Wednesday, April 19, and continue uninterrupted for 24 hours. The event is sponsored by WVU Hillel. WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr. is scheduled to participate in the opening ceremony.

During World War II, the Holocaust, conducted by Nazi Germany, claimed an estimated 12 million victims, 6 million of which were Jews. The victims’names are not all known, and participants in the local reading will recite names from a list provided by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs’and Heroes’Remembrance Authority.

Information about the Holocaust will be available at the event. The local observance is part ofUnto Every Person There is a Name,an international project to remember the victims of the Holocaust and to continue collecting names of the unidentified victims.
