Spring wildflower walks at West Virginia University’s Core Arboretum begin Sunday, April 16, at 2 p.m.

Continuing a nearly 50-year tradition, the popular walks begin in the Arboretum parking lot and last about two hours. They continue April 23 and 30. No reservations are required.

The Arboretum has superb spring wildflowers, with profuse displays from mid- to late-April. Visitors on nearly any day in April can expect to see Virginia bluebells and 20 to 30 other species, some of which bloom only briefly.

Guides from the Department of BiologyJonathan Weems, Donna Ford-Werntz and Emily Mooneywill point out wildflowers and share information about them.

The WVU Department of Biology in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences manages the 91-acre arboretum.

Persons unable to attend a guided tour are urged to visit on their own. Brochures with trail maps are available on site.

The area is named for the late Earl Core, who as former chairman of the biology department was instrumental in preserving the property for the study of biology and botany.
