West Virginia University’s Mountainlair Ballrooms will open to reveal a world of hi-tech gadgetry and presentations when the 15 th annual Computing and Technology Symposium kicks off Tuesday, April 11.

The two-day fair, April 11-12, will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday. It’s free and open to the public.

A variety of instructional, networking and computer technologies will be featured, according to Chet Cook, communications coordinator for WVU ’s Office of Information Technology, sponsors of the event.

Visitors are invited to browse vendor booths and enter hourly drawings for a multitude of prizes, including a Dell Optiplex computer.

Everything from blogs, wikis, podcasting to web application development andGlobal Grid’computing will be discussed,Cook said.Though many topics are targeted at a higher education audience, they still provide insight to technology and how it can be adapted for various purposes like protecting your personal computer.

Two high profile speakers will also address technology developments in West Virginia , Cook added.

Jim Estep, president and CEO of the West Virginia High Technology Consortium Foundation, will speak at 10 a.m. April 11. Kyle Schafer, chief technology officer, will speak at 10:30 a.m. April 12. Both presentations will be held in Rhododendron Room A of the Mountainlair.

Estep will discuss the WVHTC Foundation’s mission of fostering economic diversification within the state.

Schafer’s presentation will highlight how the state Office of Technology promotes the use of technology, creating a government that is efficient and cost effective.

Grid computing, dynamic web applications, information security, assistive technology, learning and instruction through technology are other presentation tracks being addressed during the symposium.

Presentations will be held on the first and second floors of the Mountainlair featuring speakers from nationally known companies Camcor, Dell, Horizon Wimba, JP Lilley, Sun Microsystems, Web CT, Inc. and more.
