Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Phi Gamma Delta fraternity took top honors at West Virginia University’s annual Greek Awards banquet Sunday (April 2) at the Clarion Hotel Morgan .

Chapters were recognized by the Panhellenic and Interfraternity councils for outstanding achievement in the areas of philanthropy, scholarship, recruitment, membership and alumni relations.

Kappa Kappa Gamma was named the Betty Miller Best Sorority on Campus while Phi Gamma Delta was recognized as the Joseph Gluck Best Fraternity Gluck Best Fraternity on Campus.

Each spring the Greek system comes together to celebrate its accomplishments,said Ashley Staggers, student program adviser.These organizations have been exceptional, upholding the ideals of service, leadership and scholarship.

Among its achievements, Kappa Kappa Gamma has maintained the highest grade point average among sororities for 20 consecutive semesters, she said.

In addition, the organization consistently reaches quota and maintains strong relations with other sororities and alumnae, Staggers added, noting Susan Hardesty, national Mountaineer Parents Club chair and wife of WVU President David C. Hardesty Jr., is a prominent alumna.

Phi Gamma Delta, better known as FIJI , has a strong record of community service, including participation in the Special Olympics, Red Cross blood drives, Bartlett House and the city’s Adopt-A-Street Project.

Its annual indoor soccer tournament raised approximately $2,000 for breast cancer research and awareness, Staggers said, and many of its members are involved in campus groups besides FIJI .

Greek Man and Woman of the Year honors went to seniors Knute Scholl (Sigma Chi) and Jenny Margolin (Kappa Kappa Gamma) for excellence in academics, extracurricular activities and Greek participation.

Scholl, of Madison , is a mechanical engineering major.

He served as president of Sigma Chi fraternity and has been involved in many engineering organizations, Society of Automotive Engineers Mini Baja team, Mountain Honorary and Student Government Association.

His honors include the Dean’s List and PROMISE and Sigma Chi General scholarships.

Margolin, of Charleston , is a multidisciplinary studies/elementary education major.

Like Scholl, she was elected president of her respective Greek organization. She has also been active in the WVU Honors College , Education Student Governing Association, Mountain and Mortar Board honoraries, Golden Key honor society and Mountaineer Maniacs.

Margolin’s accolades include the Dean’s List and PROMISE and Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation scholarships.

During Sunday’s banquet, Kelly Armbruster (Alpha Phi) and Heidi Jo Vargo (Kappa Kappa Gamma) were also awarded $250 textbook scholarships for academic excellence.
