Dr. Sidney Wolfe, a longtime public health advocate who works with Ralph Nader, will speak on healthcare and the legal profession Tuesday, April 4, at the West Virginia University College of Law.

Wolfe, who with Nader co-founded the Health Research Group, will discussHealth and the Law: Friend or Foe?at 11 a.m. in the Lugar Courtroom as part of the college’s annual John Fisher II Lecture in Law and Medicine.

The lecture is free and the public is invited.

Wolfe has worked 35 years as a health advocate, calling for greater accountability in the approval process for pharmaceutical drugsincluding the banning or relabeling of unsafe and ineffective drugs.

He earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1965, and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital .

Since 1995, he has been an Adjunct Professor of Internal Medicine at Case Western and a Senior Associate at the Department of Health Policy&Management at Johns Hopkins University .

He has testified before Congressional and Senate subcommittees and numerous federal agencies. He won a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1990 and is a member of several professional organizations including the Society for General Internal Medicine.

The John W. Fisher II Lecture in Law and Medicine is part of The Clark Family Lecture Series at WVU . It’s made possible through the generosity of Thomas S. Clark, M.D. and Jean Clark who have funded lectures in 10 fields of study across WVU .

Dean of Law John W. Fisher II, for whom the lecture is named, received his undergraduate degree from WVU in 1964 and his J.D. from the WVU College of Law in 1967.

He joined the law faculty in 1971 and since has served a four-year term as WVU Chief of Staff and advisor to the Office of the President, as well as has fulfilled interim law deanships on three occasions prior to his appointment as the 15th WVU Dean of Law in 1998.
