West Virginia University’s Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering will induct four new members into its Distinguished Alumni Academy at a banquet April 7 in Morgantown.
Established in 1989, with 62 current members, the Academy honors alumni of the department and others who have distinguished professional careers or who have been of outstanding service to West Virginia University.
This year’s inductees are Amr ElSawy, Anjan Ghosal, David Kirby and John F. (Jack) Waters.

Amr ElSawy , a 1977 graduate of WVU with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, is senior vice president and general manager for the MITRE Corporation, a leading systems engineering and technology company focused on solving problems of national importance in the areas of defense, aviation and enterprise modernization. ElSawy earned two master’s degrees from George Washington Universityelectrical engineering in 1990 and business administration in 1998. In 2003, he and his family endowed the Samy E.G. Elias Scholarship in Engineering at WVU to honor a longtime family friend and WVU faculty member known as the father of the PRT . ElSawy and his wife, Claudia, have two daughters, Sara and Natalie, and live in Reston , Va.
Anjan K. Ghosal , a 1988 graduate of WVU with a master’s degree in computer science, is president and CEO of IntelliNet Technologies, which provides SS7 technology and consulting to leading application developers, vendors and carriers worldwide. Ghosal is a leading authority on SS7 technology and has consulted with a number of companies, including MCI , Digital, GTE and BellCore. He has led teams that have developed applications on more than 15 different protocol vendors’solutions.
Ghosal founded IntelliNet Technologies in 1992. In 2002, he was recognized by Ernst&Young as the Entrepreneur of the Year in Florida for his contributions to the telecommunications industry. Ghosal earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur , India , in 1985. He lives in Melbourne , Fla.
David Kirby , a 1975 graduate of WVU with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, is president of Kirby Information Management Consulting in Durham , N. C., which provides information security, privacy management, and innovative information technologies in health care.
Previously, Kirby led the development of Duke Medical Center’s first in-house electronic health records systems, helped develop the first and second generations of the Duke Medical Center backbone network, directed the TeleHealth office, established and directed the Center for Information Technology Innovation, and established and directed
Duke’s first Information Security Office. He is an adjunct associate professor in the Division of Clinical Informatics of the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center . He earned a master’s degree in computer science from the University of North Carolina in 1982.
John F. (Jack) Waters , a 1987 graduate of WVU with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, is executive vice president and chief technology officer for Level 3 Communications, a Denver , Colo. -based provider of integrated communications services, including voice, private line, wavelengths, co-location, internet access, managed modem, data and dark fiber.
In 2004, the company acquired the wholesale dial access business of ICG Communications, providing dial-up internet access to America Online, Earthlink, MSN , United Online and other internet service providers. Prior to joining Level 3, Waters served as an executive staff member responsible for the architecture, design and implementation of MCI and Concert’s Internet Services. He also helped design and build MCI ’s original Internet service. Waters and his wife, Mary Elizabeth, live in Denver.
