Shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday (March 29), the West Virginia University Department of Public Safety was called to the scene of an unattended death in Dadisman Residence Hall on the Downtown Campus.

A resident of the facility, 21-year-old Jonathan David Hansen of Elkview , W.Va. , was discovered in his room. There were no signs of foul play.

The cause of death will be determined by the state medical examiner.

The West Virginia University community is saddened today,said Vice President for Student Affairs Ken Gray.Any time you lose a student, it is a difficult situation for everyone. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Hansen family and to Jonathan’s friends.

University counselors were on the scene last night to offer support and counseling to students, and remain available today and throughout the week.

Walk-in appointments at the Carruth Center for Counseling and Psychological Services are available from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays or by evening appointment by calling 304-293-4431.

Hansen, a junior, was a chemical engineering major, and a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key National Honor Society and the chemical engineering honorary.

A campus bell-ringing service will be held at an appropriate time.
