Cellist William Skidmore of the West Virginia University music faculty will present a recital at 8:15 p.m. Sunday, April 2, in the Creative Arts Center’s Bloch Learning and Performance Hall.

Joining Skidmore for the concert will be Dorothy Skidmore, flutist, and Carol Beall, pianist. The recital is free and open to the public.

The program will feature the premiere performance ofBallad,a new work by composer He Jian-Jun;Sonata V in E Minorby J.S. Bach; andSonata in D Major, Op. 102, No. 2by Beethoven.

William Skidmore has served on the music faculty for 29 years and is active as a soloist and chamber musician. Dorothy Skidmore is a flute professor at Fairmont State University and is active as a performer in the area as well. Beall has taught piano at both Fairmont State and WVU . The three performers appear frequently in the local area as the Monongahela Trio.

He Jian-Jun is a Chinese native who came to WVU to study composition with composer-in-residence John Beall. After completing his doctorate in music, he now teaches musical composition and music theory at Casper ( Wyo.) College, and his music is enjoying considerable success in the United States.

TheBalladis an effort to bring native Chinese musical elements into fusion with western compositional techniques in a classical sense, with no particular story or program in mind. However, it is presented in a manner as if the cello is a narrator telling an ancient legend in a dramatic and emotional way.
