As the West Virginia University community continues to mourn the loss of student Ryan Robert Johnston, 21, of Washington , Pa. , WVU and St. John University Parish are planning two separate memorial services for Friday, Feb. 24.

An 11 a.m. service at St. John University Parish ( 1481 University Ave. ) will be followed by an 11:50 a.m. bell-ringing ceremony at Oglebay Plaza on WVU ’s Downtown Campus.

Those attending the first service are invited to walk as a group with church leaders and WVU Student Life officials to the campus service.

WVU ’s Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity will ring the bell from the armored cruiser USS West Virginia in front of Oglebay Hall. Family, friends and members of the University community are welcome to attend the ceremony.

While the investigation continues into Johnston’s death, the University is focusing on students’grief and concerns through counseling. Anyone who has been affected by the loss is encouraged to contact WVU ’s Carruth Center , which is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; walk-ins are welcome.

Support is also available in the evening by appointment, and aGrief Groupmeets at 5 p.m. Wednesdays at the center and is open to all WVU students. The Carruth Center can be reached by calling 304-293-4431.
