West Virginia University is asking its community of students, faculty and staff to donate blood in February in memory of those lost in the Sago and Alma mining disasters.

Eight drives will be held on both campuses in February by the American Red Cross. A special mailbox will be available in the Mountainlair for those bringing cards for the families of the miners.

Donors, if they choose, may also allow their names to be printed in a special publication that may put together for those families. Of course, donors may also remain anonymous.

It’s a way to give blood while remembering those men who died while simply trying to provide for their families, organizers say.

Here are the drives for the month:

  • Feb. 21-7 p.m., Stalnaker/Dadisman halls
  • Feb. 61-7 p.m., Boreman Hall
  • Feb. 71-7 p.m., Towers, Evansdale
