Randal McCloy, the sole survivor of the Upshur County Sago Mine disaster, was transferred from West Virginia University Hospitals to HealthSouth Mountainview Regional Rehabilitation Hospital on Thursday afternoon (Jan. 26).

HealthSouth, located in Morgantown, is a tertiary rehabilitation hospital that provides both inpatient and outpatient care to persons disabled by accident, injury, illness or congenital problems.

McCloy’s condition remained fair on Thursday. He is no longer in a coma, although he is still unable to speak, according to his physician, Dr. Larry Roberts. McCloy’s fever has resolved, and he has not required hemodialysis in the past few days.

McCloy was transferred to WVU Hospitals from St. Joseph Hospital in Buckhannon in the early morning hours of Jan. 4, two days after the explosion at Sago Mine that killed 12 other miners. During his 21-day stay at WVU Hospitals, McCloy received medical care from a team of WVU physicians, including Roberts, neurosurgeon Julian Bailes and rehabilitation specialist Russell Biundo, who will oversee McCloy’s care at HealthSouth. McCloy received hyperbaric oxygen therapy Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on Jan. 5-7, and then returned to Morgantown for continued medical care.
