Before West Virginia University student Kimberly Goodwin competes in Saturday’s (Jan. 21) Miss America pageant, she has a chance to be crowned fan favorite in an online poll at CMT .com.

As Miss West Virginia , the communication studies major from Morgantown has spent her reign traveling across the Mountain State to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use.

Goodwin is a spokesperson for the American Lung Association and the author of a series of books that teaches children how to say no to peer pressure. She is currently collaborating with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, or DARE , to implement a tobacco prevention message for elementary-age children.

A former Miss Morgantown and Miss Fairmont City, Goodwin plans to pursue a master’s degree in business administration at WVU . She is a PROMISE scholar, a member of the National College Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, and former co-captain of the WVU dance team.

Saturday’s 2006 Miss America pageant is set for Las Vegas and will be televised live on CMT at 8 p.m. Saturday.
