Physicians for Randal McCloy, the sole survivor of the Jan. 2 Sago Mine accident, upgraded his condition to”serious”Sunday.
Larry Roberts, M.D., director of the Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center at WVU Hospitals, reported that McCloy’s heart and liver functions have improved steadily over the past several days. The muscle deterioration that resulted from his lengthy immobility in the minerhabdomyolysisis nearly gone. He has been breathing without ventilator assistance for more than 48 hours.
He remains in intensive care, and still has serious medical issues, Roberts said, including impaired kidney function. His neurological condition remains stable.
