Ornamental grasses, skyrocket junipers, coneflowers, red maples and blue fescue are just a few of the landscape greenery that garnish the outskirts of the new South Agricultural Sciences Building at West Virginia University .

The landscaping vision was created by designer Amee Price of Morgantown , a 2003 graduate of the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences.

How many graduates get to do something like this?asked Price. It was certainly an honor to get to do the landscape design for the Davis College . I want all of my professors to like it.

Price is a landscape designer for Alpha Associates Inc., a Morgantown-based architectural and engineering firm that designed the two-story structure located on the south side of the Agricultural Sciences Building .

Nearly 20 different plants, shrubs, perennials and trees make up the landscape design, which borders the new building. The design also includes a variety of low-maintenance plants that can be used in plant identification exercises and as examples for landscape architecture studentsplus an array of grasses and perennials that will resurface each year.

In a few years, when the landscape has had a chance to grow, its full impact will be realized, said Price, adding she wanted to make sure the landscape emphasized the building’s features and gave afresh eyeto the campus. The landscape is the first thing you see when you approach a building, and I wanted it to be welcoming and inviting.

Price’s employment with Alpha Associates began as an undergraduate internship through the Davis College’s nationally recognized landscape architecture program. She credits the internship experience with her success thus far.

Getting the internship and working during school played a huge role in getting a full-time job,Price said.

As the only landscape designer for Alpha Associates, Price has participated in developing schematic designs, renderings and design processes. She has gained valuable experience in the areas of civil engineering, drainage, slope and storm water management.

Price also designed the landscape for Clear Mountain Bank in Sabraton and the new Residence Inn, which is under construction in Morgantown . Price laid out the rendering of the Mylan Park master plan and has a role in several other pending projects.

I don’t do just landscaping, she said.I get to understand the whole package that leads to landscape architecture.

Price, a 1997 graduate of University High School , is the daughter of Dan and Debbie Price of Morgantown .
