Randal McCloy Jr., the only survivor of the Upshur County coal mine explosion, remains in critical condition at WVU Hospitals John E. Prescott, M.D., emergency medicine physician and dean of the WVU School of Medicine announced Thursday during a press conference.

Prescott described McCloy’s condition as”guarded,”saying that McCloy may have suffered brain damage and is currently in a coma. Prescott said McCloy’s coma was not medically induced and that drugs initially used to sedate him were wearing off, but”he is not waking up as we had hoped he would do.”

Multiple vital organs were affected from the oxygen deprivation McCloy suffered while trapped underground, and some of those organsincluding McCloy’s lungs, heart, kidneys and liverwere showing slight improvement Thursday, Prescott said. Physicians have not seen a change in McCloy’s neurological status after repeated neurological examinations, and are continuing to do more testing.
