West Virginia University students interested in studying abroad have an exciting, affordable way to explore other cultures through the Global Educational Opportunities Grant program.

The WVU Office of International Programs is accepting applications for the annual GEO Grant competition through Feb. 17.

The program, supported by various endowments and International Programs, enables undergraduate students to pursue long-term or semester study abroad opportunities and graduate students to engage in international research and training.

Awards range from $500 to $1,000 and are often used to help defray the cost of airfare, said Julia Kisner, study abroad adviser. Past grant winners have traveled to countries such as Australia , France , Guatemala , Italy , Japan , Mexico , Scotland and Spain .

Global education is not only highly marketable, but it’s necessary, said senior Sarah Lovell, a computer engineering major from Martinsburg who spent the fall semester studying in Morocco .Study abroad is more than just a way to enhance your resumeit’s a way for students to discover who they are. It’s a life-changing experience.

Any full-time or part-time WVU student enrolled in the spring 2006 semester is eligible to submit a proposal. Winners will be announced in April.

A completed GEO Grant application includes a course transcript, a 1,000-1,500 word essay or project description, personal references and a budget.
