The West Virginia University Community Music Program will begin registering students for spring classes at the Creative Arts Center Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Musical opportunities are available for all ages, from babies to adults. The program offers private lessons in piano, organ, voice, brass, woodwind, percussion, harp, strings, guitar, jazz singing, improvisation, theory and composition, conducting and the Alexander Technique.

Young children can have fun exploring music through various musical activities and games in the child development classes: Music for Babies (infants and young toddlers), Explore and Enjoy (for ages 2 and 3) and Musicland Express (ages 4 to 6).

Additional classes include a six-week introductory harp class, an eight-week class in the Alexander Technique, Suzuki Violin (ages 4 and up), group beginning piano (ages 7 to 9), beginning group piano for adults and music theory.

The Alexander Technique is a method for improving balance, support and flexibility and enhancing performance. The technique is used by performing artists and teachers to reduce performance anxiety, lessen likelihood of injury, enhance stage presence, improve breathing and voice capacity, and promote inner calm.

Enjoy the camaraderie of fellow musicians to learn the art of ensemble playing in any of the programs ensembles, including the Community Arts Orchestra (junior high to adult), Flute Ensemble (junior high to adult) and Steel Band Ensemble (age 9 to adult).

In addition, the Community Elementary Choir (ages 7 to 8) and Youth Choir (ages 9 to 14) will be warming up their voices for a fun, rewarding experience with other aspiring young singers.

Registration for Community Arts Program classes will continue through Jan. 19 in Room 401A of the WVU Creative Arts Center. Classes begin the week of Jan. 23. Community Music Program office hours are noon-4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
