Its official, West Virginia is facing SEC champion Georgia in the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl to be played at Atlantas Georgia Dome, Jan. 2, 2006, at 8:30 pm. The game will be televised by ABC .
BCS bowl pairings were revealed on ABC Sunday evening.
The Mountaineers (10-1) clinched the Big East championship last Saturday following a victory over Pitt and a South Florida loss at Connecticut. Yesterday, West Virginia defeated South Florida, 28-13, in Tampa.
Georgia routed LSU , 34-14, in the SEC championship game yesterday in the Georgia Dome. Just five points in losses to Florida (14-10) and Auburn (31-30) separated the 10-2 Bulldogs from having an undefeated season.
Georgia is ranked eighth in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN polls, while West Virginia is ranked 11th in both polls.
West Virginia will be making its third trip to the Sugar Bowl. The Mountaineers lost to Georgia Tech in the 1954 Sugar Bowl and lost to Florida in the 1994 Sugar Bowl.
The meeting will be West Virginias first against Georgia. The 72nd annual Sugar Bowl is being played in Atlanta this year due to extensive damage to the New Orleans Superdome caused by Hurricane Katrina.
WVU announced yesterday that Mountaineer Athletic Club Blue Club Level donors and higher were sent ticket order forms that list ticket maximums available to them in their donation level. MAC members have until Friday, Dec. 9, to return their order forms by mail or in person to the Mountaineer Ticket Office.
No phone or Internet orders will be accepted.
Buckskin Level MAC donors and non-MAC football season ticket holders received separate order forms. Those persons have the option of requesting two bowl tickets via a lottery process that will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Notification of winners will begin that same day. Bowl tickets will be shipped securely to customers on Monday, Dec. 19.
WVU students may enter a lottery for 500 tickets reserved for the Sugar Bowl. Students should log on to the student ticketing web sitewww.WVUGAME.comand follow the same procedure used during the regular season football ticketing process. Loyalty points accumulated during the 2005 football season will count toward the lottery.
The 48-hour request period begins at 12:01 am on Thursday, Dec. 8, and ends at 11:50 pm on Friday, Dec. 9. Students will be notified of their status via email on the morning of Dec. 10.
