The West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre of the Creative Arts Center.

Harvey Felder, the new conductor of the group, will present a program that includes works by student composers taking part in the National Student Composers Conference Nov. 11-12 at the CAC .

In addition, there will be a special appearance by the WVU Wind Symphony, conducted by John Hendricks.

The Wind Symphony will performThe Blatherskites Comeuppanceby Carl Schimmel, a doctoral student at Duke University. This is a tongue-in-cheek piece made up of three short episodes. A blatherskite is someone who talks at great length without making any sense. The piece tells the fate of the blatherskite with the use of a squeaky dog door, a bicycle horn and a popping balloon.

The concert also includesSarshaotharby student composer Joseph Patrick andCalderaby student composer Christopher Dietz.

Felder will also conduct the orchestra in performances of Samuel BarbersFirst Essay for OrchestraandTragic Overture for Orchestra in D minor, Op. 81by Johannes Brahms.
