West Virginia University is planning an open night of free fun, food, recreation, live music and prizes for area high school students from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Student Recreation Center.

Check the Recwill be open to all area high school students to explore and learn about West Virginia University as well as take part in educational and recreational activities.

On tap is the announcement of the winner of theTop Ten Reasons Alcohol Can Hurt Mecontest. The finalists are: Ben Reese of North Marion High School, Christian Feiereisen of South Harrison High School, Deidra Powell of Jefferson-Morgan High School, and Brittany Parks of University High School.

Additionally, a band from Clay-Battelle High School, Tyler Lash and the 501, was selected to play as the opener for headliner Blue Skies Mourning.

WVU sponsors include: the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Center for Rural Emergency Medicine, Community Medicine Student Association, Department of Community Medicine, Office of Drug Abuse Intervention Studies, Student Affairs and Student Health Service.

Community sponsors are Black Bear Restaurant, Boston Beanery, Coldstone Creamery, Funky Imports, Garfields Restaurant, Maurices, Mountaineer Boys&GirlsClub, Shoneys and Texas Roadhouse.

Students are reminded to wear or bring tennis shoes to use the facility; also swimwear and towels if they decide to use the pool.
