The West Virginia University Society of Professional Journalists Chapter will be showingCal Price and the Pocahontas Timesat 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, in Room 205 of Martin Hall on the WVU Downtown Campus. The event is open to the public.

The documentary is based on the career of Calvin Price and a historical look at mountain journalism and Prices struggle for conservation of natural resources.

Price ran the Pocahontas Times from 1906-1957. His columns and stories were often reprinted in large daily newspapers, and he was admired throughout the nation asThe Old Master of Mountain Journalism. He was a well-known naturalist and conservationist.

SPJ will also host three speakers to discuss Prices life and the importance of community journalism. Alumnus B.J. Gudmundsson, writer, producer and editor of the film, will speak about Price and the legacy of his journalism. Pamela Pritt, managing editor of the Pocahontas Times, will discuss the importance of community newspapers.

WVU Assistant Professor John Temple will also speak regarding an article he wrote for American Journalism Review on rural West Virginia papers. In the article, he wrote about Price.

Refreshments will be available after the showing of the film.

Students from other universities have also been invited. This will give the WVU Chapter of SPJ a chance to meet SPJ members from other chapters.
